Neighbourhood book swaps, 2020 Rathmines, Rathgar, Harold’s Cross and Donnycarney

Book swaps set up on driveways, doorsteps and walls during the 2020 lockdown, while libraries and charity shops were shut.

Most were a table or a few boxes at the end of a driveway. One was a small blue house-shaped box on a wall, part of the international Little Free Library idea.

Books came from neighbours, from libraries clearing old stock, and from a local community group that dropped off boxes.

People said it gave them something to read and a way to help. Neighbours left thank-you notes and small gifts. One person said a book from a swap changed their life.

Most organisers expected to stop once lockdown ended. We have not checked which are still going.

How it happened

  1. Spring 2020

Swaps appear across Dublin 6 and in Donnycarney.

What helped

  • Starting with a table, not a building project.
  • Donations from neighbours and libraries.

What was hard

  • A lost door and a leaking roof.
  • Running out of books, then getting too many worn-out ones.
  • Unwanted donations.
  • Some organisers worried about taking trade from bookshops.

Who was involved

  • Residents on their own driveways
  • A local community group that supplied books

Money

  • None. Books were donated.
